Lawrence Public Schools enjoy and appreciate the support of hundreds of parent and community volunteers. During American Education Week each year, the school district recognizes outstanding school volunteers with its Friends of Education reception. Each school, and the school district, selects an outstanding volunteer for recognition. Our Friends of Education represent all of the wonderful school volunteers who support our students and staff throughout the school year. We appreciate their involvement and support of student success!

We know, without a doubt, that it takes the involvement of the entire community to raise the achievement of ALL students and close achievement gaps. The Friends of Education reception honors parents and partners who serve on school site councils, parent-teacher organizations, booster clubs, LEAP partnerships and numerous committees. They volunteer to mentor, donate, feed, coach, advocate, garden and fundraise. We are a better school system because of their efforts.

Parent and community involvement in our schools is critical to our children’s success. We know that by working together – teachers, parents and community partners support each other and help students achieve to their fullest potential. When caring adults, like our Friends of Education, give of themselves to the benefit of our teachers and students, they show our children that education is important and that it’s a priority in our community. They set a good example for our kids. They read to them, teach them to play chess, show them how to conduct science experiments and help them build the knowledge and skills they need to be successful in school and in life. They demonstrate to our students the importance of public service and giving of oneself to help others.

We feel fortunate to work in a district that is backed by hundreds of active and caring parents and a supportive and involved community.  We are thankful for that support every day.
